The University of Florida has been selected by the U.S. Department of State to lead the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for High-Value Crops — SAFE (Safeguarding Agriculture, Food and Economy). Led by UF/IFAS, the initiative will work in seven countries to detect and contain crop pests and diseases before they threaten Florida and U.S. farms, while helping farmers reduce food losses, improve food safety and expand access to nutritious produce.
The initiative draws on expertise across UF, including agricultural and biological engineering. Nargiza Ludgate, Ph.D., of UF’s Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, serves as associate director for operations, overseeing operations, workforce development and private-sector engagement.
