The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced an additional $57 million investment dedicated to expanding independent meat and poultry processing capacity across 40 states. The grant funding, distributed under the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP), is designed to help small and mid-sized processors upgrade fabrication equipment, expand cold storage, and increase daily harvest capacity.
Federal agricultural officials emphasized that supporting regional processing infrastructure strengthens supply chain resilience, prevents bottlenecks during high-volume marketing windows, and fosters competitive cash bidding for livestock producers. The funding targets facilities that process pork, beef, and specialty meats, enabling independent packers to adopt automated deboning lines and meet USDA-inspected packaging standards for retail distribution.
Livestock producer organizations welcomed the federal investment, highlighting that localized packing alternatives offer vital market access for independent growers. As large commercial packing plants manage tighter operating margins amid seasonal supply peaks, expanding regional processing capacity provides producers with broader slaughter options. Upgraded processing facilities are expected to begin commercial operations over the coming year.
