Wheat, barley research groups join forces to reshape breeding system

The Canadian Wheat Research Coalition (CWRC) and Canadian Barley Research Coalition (CBRC) are joining forces to help reshape the way wheat and barley varieties are developed in Canada.

In a news release, the two producer-funded organizations announced Sept. 3 that they have entered a formal strategic partnership.

Breeding system reviewed

This builds on discussions already underway between the CWRC and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) following a CWRC review of Canada’s wheat breeding innovation system.

The review examined potential risks and opportunities in the current system, with the goal of ensuring it continues to deliver elite varieties for farmers across the country.

The CBRC formally joined those discussions after participating in a CWRC visioning workshop in April.

Industry stakeholders and AAFC representatives at the workshop worked toward a shared vision for the future of western Canadian wheat and barley breeding.
