To meet the needs of women experiencing homelessness in Calgary, Alberta’s government is investing in new year-round shelter spaces for women. The 40 new spaces will be available immediately, and are supported through $762,702 in funding, including $98,500 in one-time startup costs.
“As the number of women experiencing homelessness in the province increases, it’s of the utmost importance for Alberta’s government to dedicate space to ensure vulnerable women have a safe place to stay. Homelessness is a top priority for my department and Alberta’s government, and we will continue to work with our partners to make sure those who need our support are able to get it.”

Seniors, Community and Social Services provides $32 million annually to operate about 1,800 emergency shelter spaces in Calgary. This new funding means women experiencing homelessness will now have 78 shelter spaces dedicated for their use, including 40 at the Mustard Seed, 18 at the Salvation Army-Wagner shelter and 20 operated by YWCA Calgary.
