SHIC Reports Increased PRRS, PDCoV, Mycoplasma Detections in Wean to Harvest

The Swine Health Information Center reports higher detections of PRRS, PDCoV and Mycoplasma in wean to harvest over the past month but decreases in Influenza detections. As part of its September e-Newsletter, the Swine Health Information Center has released its monthly domestic and global swine health monitoring reports.SHIC Executive Director Dr. Lisa Becton says, domestically we saw increases in Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome, PDCoV and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae detections in wean to harvest but decreases for Influenza.

Quote-Dr. Lisa Becton-Swine Health Information Center:

For PRRS, there was a moderate increase in wean to harvest and that has been seen since August. In addition, for Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, there was also an increase of case positivity in the wean to harvest sector. That was at 26 percent,  which is also the highest noted in 2026.However, all other age groups for mycoplasma were within expected ranges.

For PED and Porcine Deltacoronavirus, increases were also noticed in wean to harvest since August. And lastly, for Influenza, there was a decrease in case positivity in the adult category and that's the lowest noted since 2014.Some of the circulation in wean to harvest could be from animals that had potential outbreaks in the sow farms earlier in the year.

However, we do know wean to harvest sometimes is not as highly biosecure as other sectors and so this may just be a reflection of what's currently circulating out in those populations. It really is important to evaluate the steps to manage these outbreaks and also risks for infection because these animals can also lead to infection or exposure back into sow farms.Other items really that are critical to evaluate, especially in fall and going into winter, are activities like manure management and how to ensure that we can reduce risks of disease transmission during this active time.

Dr. Becton says, although influenza detections decreased, we can see increased case positivity during fall time, especially at seasonal changes, so it's important to work with your veterinarian to ensure proper immunity in the sow herd and going into wean to harvest.
