Governor General Georges Vanier’s throne speech on May 16, 1963 opened the first session of Canada’s 26th Parliament. Lester Pearson served as prime minister.

The government planned to introduce legislation to create another federal ag minister “in order that the needs of agriculture in both eastern and western Canada may receive closer attention,” Vanier said.

The government also promised to expand markets for Canadian products domestically and internationally.
