On Jan. 18, 1962, Governor General Georges Vanier’s throne speech opened the fifth session of Canada’s 24th Parliament. John Diefenbaker served as prime minister.
Politicians in attendance heard they would be asked to provide the necessary funding to maintain an ag price stabilization policy.
In addition, MPs were asked to help pass laws to assist Prairie farmers in overcoming the 1961 drought and to extend the application period of the Farm Improvement Loans Act.
