Prior to winning a heavyweight boxing championship in 1919, Jack Dempsey grew up on a farm in Manassa, Colo. His parents were sharecroppers.

Dempsey started working picking crops on a farm near Steamboat Springs, Colo. by the age of eight. He worked several ag-related jobs to help his family make ends meet, including unloading beets for 10 cents per ton.
