Basilio spent his childhood on an onion farm in Canastota, N.Y., earning him the nickname “The Upstate Onion Farmer.”
Basilio won championships in two weight classes during his career. He captured the welterweight belt in 1955 from Tony DeMarco, and the middleweight championship from Sugar Ray Robinson in 1957.
