Glenn Hall, who grew up in Humboldt, Sask., won 407 games as a goaltender in the NHL for the Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues.

About 10 years into his career, Hall purchased a 155-acre farm in Stony Plain, Alta.

After he retired in 1966, Hall received calls asking why he wasn’t at training camp.

His wife told team representatives “I was outside painting the barn,” Hall said in a 2016 interview with NHL.com. “Which I was, because I sure wasn’t going to pay someone to do it. So I couldn’t come to the phone.”
