Jean-Francois Millet finished this work in 1857. He based the piece on the famine that affected Europe from 1845 to 1850.
The painting shows two farmers bowing in a field over a basket of potato to say the Angelus. This prayer, when paired with the ringing of a church bell, marked the end of a day’s work.
