In 2016, scientists mapped the genetic material of a 5,310-year-old corn cob discovered in Tehuacan, Mexico. It measured 16.3 millimeters long and 3.1 millimeters wide.
The genome of the cob shows that all present-day corn descends from that area of Mexico, the researchers said.
