New AI driven automation aims to improve safety and productivity

AGCO has announced a new partnership with Agility Robotics. The collaboration will explore how advanced humanoid robots can support manufacturing operations and help create smarter, more efficient workplaces.

The companies have signed a commercial agreement focused on introducing AI-powered robotic technology into manufacturing environments. The first pilot project is expected to begin in 2027 at AGCO's production facility in Hesston, Kansas.

As industries continue searching for new ways to improve productivity and workplace safety, automation is becoming an increasingly important part of daily operations. AGCO believes advanced robotics can help strengthen manufacturing processes while allowing employees to focus on work that requires greater skill and decision-making.

"This strategic relationship views humanoid robotics and AI as essential 'teammates' in building flexible, intelligent factories," said Thomas Enghof, AGCO's Director of Manufacturing Technology. "They unlock automation in complex, human-centric workflows, augmenting human capabilities by absorbing repetitive, strenuous or hazardous tasks. By pairing human ingenuity with robust robotic engineering and strict safety governance, we create resilient manufacturing systems that empower the workforce and deliver measurable business value."

The project centers on Digit, a humanoid robot developed by Agility Robotics. Unlike traditional industrial robots that often remain fixed in one location, Digit is designed to move through work environments built for humans. This allows the robot to perform a variety of tasks while working alongside employees.

Initially, Digit will assist with activities such as sorting parts, stacking materials, and placing storage totes in designated locations. These duties are necessary for efficient manufacturing operations but often involve repetitive movements and physical effort.

By assigning routine and physically demanding work to robots, companies can reduce strain on workers and improve workplace ergonomics. This approach also helps employees dedicate more time to higher-value responsibilities, including problem-solving, quality control, innovation, and operational improvements.

AGCO sees humanoid robotics and artificial intelligence as tools that can complement the workforce rather than replace it. The company believes people and technology can work together to create more flexible production systems capable of adapting to changing business needs.

The partnership also highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in manufacturing. Digit uses advanced AI technology to learn and adapt to different workflows. This adaptability allows the robot to function in dynamic production environments and respond to operational changes more effectively.

In addition to the robot itself, Agility Robotics provides a cloud-based platform known as Agility Arc. The system helps companies deploy, monitor, and manage robotic fleets across manufacturing facilities. By simplifying robot management, organizations can introduce automation more quickly and efficiently.

One advantage of the technology is that it can often be integrated without major infrastructure changes. This can make automation more accessible for companies seeking productivity improvements while avoiding costly facility redesigns.

Workplace safety is another major focus of the initiative. Repetitive lifting, carrying, and material handling tasks can increase the risk of workplace fatigue and injury. Humanoid robots can perform many of these jobs consistently while reducing physical demands on employees.

The manufacturing sector continues to face challenges related to labor availability, productivity expectations, and operational efficiency. Many businesses are adopting new technologies to remain competitive and meet customer demands. Robotics and artificial intelligence are becoming important solutions for addressing these challenges.

"We're excited to work alongside AGCO as they continue to lead the way in agricultural innovation," said Daniel Diez, Chief Business Officer of Agility Robotics. "By introducing Agility's Digit humanoid robots into AGCO's operations, we have an opportunity to strengthen manufacturing processes, support employees in demanding tasks and demonstrate how advanced robotics can create measurable impact across modern production environments."

AGCO joins a growing list of companies exploring humanoid robotics as part of their long-term manufacturing strategy. The increasing adoption of advanced robotic systems reflects broader industry efforts to modernize operations and improve performance.

For individuals interested in careers in agriculture, manufacturing, and technology, this trend also signals new opportunities. As automation expands, employers may seek workers with skills in robotics, engineering, artificial intelligence, software systems, and advanced manufacturing processes.

The future of manufacturing is expected to combine human expertise with intelligent technology. Employees will continue to play a critical role in decision-making, innovation, and quality management, while robots help perform repetitive and physically demanding work.

Through this partnership, AGCO and Agility Robotics aim to demonstrate how next-generation automation can support productivity, safety, and workforce development. Their efforts reflect a broader movement toward smart manufacturing systems designed to meet the needs of modern industry while creating stronger and more resilient operations.
