New hyperspectral imaging tools improve farm monitoring and decisions
A new collaboration between Metaspectral and Planet is bringing advanced satellite technology to agriculture and environmental monitoring.
The partnership combines Planet's Tanager™ hyperspectral satellite data with Metaspectral's Clarity platform. The goal is to transform large amounts of satellite imagery into practical insights that can support better decision-making in farming and other industries.
Unlike traditional satellite monitoring systems, hyperspectral technology captures detailed information across a wide range of wavelengths. This allows users to identify differences in crops, soil, and vegetation that may not be visible through standard imaging methods.
Metaspectral's Clarity platform uses artificial intelligence to analyze hyperspectral data and turn it into easy-to-understand information. The system helps identify crop stress, water issues, vegetation changes, and other important indicators before visible signs appear in the field.
“Tanager gives organizations access to a new level of spectral information from orbit,” said Francis Doumet, CEO of Metaspectral. “Clarity turns that information into intelligence they can trust. Our partnership with Planet is focused on deriving intelligence from hyperspectral analysis-ready data and transforming it into science-based evidence for high-confidence, high-consequence decisions.”
The technology also provides explainable and evidence-based results, helping users better understand how conclusions are reached. This supports more confident decisions related to crop management, field inspections, irrigation planning, and environmental monitoring.
Beyond agriculture, the platform is being used in aerospace, defense, mining, manufacturing, forestry, and environmental applications. The company has also been selected by NASA for deployment on the International Space Station and holds several U.S. patents related to AI and hyperspectral imaging.
Planet, founded by former NASA scientists, operates one of the world's leading Earth observation networks. Through this partnership, both companies aim to make advanced spectral intelligence more accessible and useful for organizations that rely on accurate monitoring and timely information.
“Tanager expands the scope of what organizations can monitor from orbit by capturing rich hyperspectral observations across broad wavelength ranges,” said Linds Panther, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Planet. “Metaspectral’s Clarity platform translates those observations into spectral intelligence, supporting applications where monitoring, change detection, and decision confidence are critical.”
As agriculture increasingly adopts digital technologies, AI-powered hyperspectral imaging may help farmers identify potential issues sooner and manage resources more effectively.
