The office of a B.C. MP with ties to agriculture files has confirmed that MP’s status for the next federal election.

“Alistair (MacGregor) has been nominated as the NDP candidate in Cowichan-Malahat-Langford for the upcoming election,” Lucas Klassen, communications assistant for MacGregor, told Farms.com in an email.

MacGregor has been the NDP’s agriculture critic since 2019. He is also the party’s critic for food inflation and the deputy justice critic.

MacGregor has been an MP since the 2015 election when he won the riding with almost 36 per cent of voter support. He received similar support in 2019, and in 2021 won the riding with nearly 43 per cent of the votes.

The NDP ag critic is the third MP to clarify his election status with Farms.com.

With a federal election scheduled to take place by October 2025, Farms.com has contacted the federal ag minister, and the Conservative and Bloc ag critics for confirmation of their election participation.

The office of John Barlow, the Conservative ag critic, deputy chair of the House of Commons’ ag committee and MP for Foothills in Alberta, told Farms.com in early June that he will run in the 2025 campaign.

He’s been an MP since 2015, and voters re-elected him in 2019 and 2021 with 82 and 69 per cent support, respectively.

And representatives for Lawrence MacAulay confirmed in late May that the federal ag minister and MP for Cardigan in P.E.I. is ready to represent the people of his riding when the next election comes.

He first won the riding in 1988 and he’s been the voice for Cardigan in the House of Commons ever since.

The other MP Farms.com awaits a response from is Yves Perron, the Bloc’s ag critic and representative for Berthier—Maskinongé in Quebec.

In the 2021 election, Perron won with 19,339 votes, or just over 35 per cent of the riding’s support.
