Arkansas Rice Growers Face Tough Season

Low acreage rising costs and drought pressure rice production

Rice farmers are facing a difficult growing season as high production costs, drought conditions, and market pressures continue to affect profitability.

Agriculture experts recently reviewed the outlook for rice production and highlighted major challenges facing growers. One of the biggest concerns is a sharp decline in planted rice acreage, reaching some of the lowest levels seen in decades. Rising input costs and uncertain market conditions have encouraged some farmers to shift acreage to other crops.

“Right before planting, there was a dramatic uptick in urea prices,” said Jarrod Hardke, extension rice agronomist for the Division of Agriculture. “It became a question of ‘just how low is this going to go?’ Nobody really knew where that bottom was, myself included.”

Fuel and fertilizer prices have increased significantly, putting additional strain on farm budgets. Although rice prices have improved compared to last year, many growers are still struggling to cover production expenses. Experts noted that strong yields are needed to offset rising costs and maintain profitability.

The weather has also added pressure. Persistent dry conditions and below normal rainfall have increased irrigation demands and created additional risks for producers. These factors have made financial planning more difficult for many operations.

Fertilizer management remains a key concern. Specialists say nutrient prices have become increasingly unpredictable, making it harder for growers to budget effectively. However, improved access to pricing information and flexible application strategies may help reduce risk.

Industry researchers also identified potential opportunities through specialty rice production, including aromatic varieties that could open new market channels. At the same time, growers must address weed control challenges, including increasing herbicide resistance in key weed species.

“The further development of herbicide-resistant barnyardgrass, specifically the development of populations of barnyardgrass that are resistant to all available post-emergence options, is probably my biggest concern,” said Bob Scott, extension weed scientist for the Division of Agriculture. “We are relying very heavily on a few residual options for barnyardgrass control.”

Despite current difficulties, experts remain focused on helping farmers adapt through research, improved management practices, and market diversification. As harvest activity begins, growers continue to monitor yields, costs, and market conditions while planning for future seasons.
