Partnership aims to grow winter canola acres and renewable fuel supplies

Bayer and Neste have entered into a commercial agreement aimed at expanding winter canola production in the Southern Great Plains region of the United States. The collaboration is designed to help meet rising demand for renewable fuels while creating new market opportunities for farmers. 

The agreement focuses on increasing the acreage of Bayer's newgold® winter canola, a crop expected to play an important role in the future biofuels supply chain. As governments, businesses, and industries seek lower-carbon energy sources, renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel are becoming increasingly important. Industry estimates suggest that global demand for these fuels could grow significantly over the coming decades. 

Winter canola offers several advantages for both farmers and energy producers. The crop can be planted as a rotational option alongside wheat, helping diversify farm operations and improve land use efficiency. By introducing winter canola into existing farming systems, growers may have additional opportunities to increase revenue while maintaining productive agricultural land. 

The partnership also supports the development of a reliable supply of oilseed feedstocks for renewable fuel production. Oil extracted from canola can be used to produce renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel. At the same time, the high-protein meal remaining after oil extraction can be used as livestock feed for dairy cattle, beef cattle, poultry, and swine. 

Another important aspect of collaboration is the creation of a broader value chain network. Bayer and Neste plan to work with additional partners throughout the agricultural and energy sectors to encourage production, processing, transportation, and marketing opportunities. Building a strong supply chain can help ensure demand for growers while supporting the expansion of renewable fuel markets.

By building robust value chains, we can turn agricultural innovations into scalable realities for growers and energy markets,” said Artturi Mikkola, Senior Vice President, Renewable Products Feedstock Sourcing and Trading at Neste.  

HE added, “Through the Bayer newgold® winter canola collaboration, we are establishing a value chain in one of Neste’s key markets and developing opportunities to increase farm yields and grower income. This renewable raw material can be scaled rapidly in the coming years, which can help meet increasing biofuels demand. 

Energy security and sustainability continue to be major priorities in many parts of the world. Renewable fuels are viewed as one practical solution for reducing emissions in transportation sectors where full electrification may be difficult. Industries such as aviation, rail transportation, marine shipping, and heavy-duty equipment often require alternative energy solutions that can work alongside existing infrastructure. 

To support these growing needs, Bayer is developing new canola hybrids designed specifically for the Southern Great Plains. The company plans to introduce newgold® winter canola hybrids beginning in 2027. These hybrids are expected to offer several agronomic benefits, including improved winter hardiness, enhanced yield potential, and increased oil content. 

The new canola varieties will also feature advanced trait technologies intended to help growers manage production challenges more effectively. Improved crop performance can contribute to better profitability while supporting sustainable farming practices. 

For farmers, the expansion of winter canola may provide additional flexibility in crop planning. Rotational cropping systems are often used to improve soil health, manage production risks, and diversify income sources. Introducing another profitable crop option can help strengthen farm businesses while contributing to broader agricultural sustainability goals. 

The growing interest in biofuels is creating opportunities across the agricultural sector. Crops such as canola, soybean, corn, and other oilseeds are increasingly being considered important components of renewable energy production. As demand rises, partnerships between agriculture and energy companies are expected to play a key role in building reliable feedstock supplies.
