The control of plowing straight
Plowing matches are more than just agricultural contests—they’re a celebration of heritage, craftsmanship, and community. These events bring together farmers, enthusiasts, and spectators to witness the age-old skill of turning soil with precision and pride. The International Plowing Match & Rural Expo is in Grassie until Saturday, September 20.
What happens at a plowing match?
A plowing match is a competition where participants each plow a designated section of a field, aiming to produce the straightest, neatest furrows possible. While the concept is simple, the execution requires a deep understanding of soil conditions, equipment handling, and technique.
Modern plowing matches typically feature multiple classes, including:
- Horse-drawn plows: A nod to tradition, these classes showcase the harmony between farmer and draft animal, emphasizing control and finesse.
- Tractor plowing: Highlighting technological evolution, these classes demonstrate the power and precision of farm machinery.
Competitors are judged on several criteria, with straightness and neatness of furrows being paramount. The goal is to create a uniform, aesthetically pleasing pattern that reflects both skill and care. 2025 IPM plowing match winners will be announced tonight (Friday, September 19) at a banquet event.

Beyond the competition, plowing matches serve as community gatherings.
They offer a chance to share stories, pass down knowledge, and celebrate rural life. For many, it’s an opportunity to reconnect with agricultural roots and appreciate the dedication that goes into preparing the land.
