Farmers can safely dispose of unwanted pesticides and old animal medications
Southern Saskatchewan farmers will soon have an opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted pesticides and expired livestock or equine medications through a free environmental stewardship program organized by Cleanfarms.
The Unwanted Pesticides and Old Livestock/Equine Medications (UPLM) collection program is one of Cleanfarms’ longest-running initiatives. The program helps farmers remove outdated agricultural products from their farms while ensuring safe and responsible disposal.
The initiative operates on a rotating schedule across Canada and is funded by Cleanfarms’ crop protection industry members and the Canadian Animal Health Institute (CAHI). Farmers can drop off eligible products at designated collection sites at no cost.

Our long-standing partnership with Cleanfarms reflects our members’ commitment to protecting animal health, keeping farms and communities safe, and supporting a strong and sustainable Canadian food system,” said Dr. Catherine Filejski, President and CEO of the Canadian Animal Health Institute.
Collection sites are hosted by agricultural retailers and community partners across participating regions. These locations hold one-day or multi-day events, making it easier for growers, livestock producers, and horse owners to access the service.
“Around this time every year, farmers start asking us about upcoming UPLM collection dates and even help spread the word themselves: it’s that important to them,” said Shane Hedderson, Cleanfarms Executive Director. “In last year’s collections – which took place in different regions, we saw a 22% increase in return over the last time events were held in those regions, and we hope to see that momentum continue through 2026.”
In Southern Saskatchewan, events are scheduled from Oct. 26 to Oct. 30. There are also similar events in other provinces. For 2026, collection events in British Columbia’s Vancouver Island and Fraser Valley regions will take place from Oct. 6 to Oct. 16.
The initiative allows producers to clean up storage areas, reduce environmental risks, and manage obsolete agricultural products safely. By participating, farmers contribute to responsible stewardship practices that help protect their land, communities, and natural resources.
