Minnesota's corn refining sector drives jobs and innovation

Corn refining plays a vital role in Minnesota’s agricultural and economic landscape. Companies like Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) are leading this transformation by refining U.S.-grown corn into a wide variety of products used across multiple industries.

From starches and sweeteners to bioplastics and plant-based textiles, these innovations turn local crops into ingredients found in thousands of consumer and industrial goods.

Nationally, the corn refining industry represents an impressive $61 billion in economic output. It supports more than 166,000 jobs across the United States, strengthening rural communities and building opportunities from farms to factories.

In Minnesota alone, the industry contributes more than $1.9 billion to the state’s economy every year and supports over 5,000 jobs. These jobs span from agricultural production to refining, logistics, research, and product distribution, providing stable employment in both urban and rural areas.

“The corn refining industry is an economic engine for Minnesota and a cornerstone of rural prosperity across America,” said John Bode, President and CEO of the Corn Refiners Association. “Our members create good-paying manufacturing jobs and help sustain strong local economies. The industry supports farmers by creating steady markets for their crops, drives business across the supply chain, and fuels innovation in food and the ag bioeconomy. The industry’s impact is far-reaching, strengthening rural communities, supporting American agriculture, and powering economic growth.”

However, the industry faces several challenges, including changing political regulations, global trade disruptions, and supply chain pressures. These factors are creating new headwinds that could influence the future of the sector. Despite these challenges, the corn refining industry continues to be a cornerstone of Minnesota’s agricultural economy, driving growth, innovation, and sustainability throughout the supply chain.

By turning locally grown corn into valuable products, this industry not only adds value to U.S. agriculture but also plays a major role in shaping a more sustainable and economically strong future for Minnesota.

Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. We also have a part-time employee, Brock. My dad started the farm in 1980. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.

I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.

I hope you enjoy my content and ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks for watching!
