New Saskatoon lab links soil sampling testing and digital records in one smart system
Croptimistic Technology Inc. has launched SWAT LABS, a new in-house soil analysis facility created to improve how soil data is collected, tested, and stored. The lab is located at the company’s new corporate headquarters in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. This facility is designed to connect soil sampling, laboratory testing, and digital records into one organized system known as the SWAT Ecosystem.
SWAT LABS has already processed soil samples collected during the fall 2025 season. The lab is planned to open to selected partners across Western Canada in spring 2026. By bringing soil testing in-house, Croptimistic aims to improve accuracy, speed, and reliability of soil data while giving farmers clearer and faster information for better crop decisions.
“With the startup of SWAT LABS, we’re rethinking the soil analysis workflow at Croptimistic,” said Phillip Harder, VP of Data Science. “Instead of treating lab results as a disconnected data source, we’ve designed an operationally efficient system where soil sampling, analysis, and digital records are seamlessly connected through SWAT RECORDS”.
“By bringing soil analysis in-house, we improve laboratory accuracy and precision, connect quality control directly to our samplers and agronomists, and build an integrated soil library that enables enhanced data-driven analytics of soil–crop interactions,” said Joel Ens, Soil Scientist.
The company has created a new digital workflow called SWAT Records. This system connects sample collection, laboratory results, and field records in one digital platform. Instead of treating lab results as separate reports, Croptimistic now links every result directly to the sampler, agronomist, and field. This approach supports better tracking, improved quality control, and stronger data consistency.
The facility is equipped with modern laboratory technology and staffed by trained professionals. During the busy season, SWAT LABS employs eight new staff members, helping support local jobs. The company plans to gradually expand capacity as demand increases, supporting both farm service growth and local economic development.
Croptimistic is also building a large soil spectral library using its new dual-probe sampling systems. These tools collect in-field soil sensor data. The data science team then calibrates this information using traditional soil tests completed at SWAT LABS. This process allows the company to better study soil–crop relationships and improve data-driven farm recommendations.
“It’s been exciting to bring together an experienced and skilled team, build a cutting-edge facility with the latest technology, and be able to bring our customers extra value,” said Darin Richman, Lab Manager. “Providing more information for our clients while boosting our local economy is a double win.”
By combining automated sampling tools, laboratory analysis, and digital records into one connected system, Croptimistic is preparing its business for the future of smart farming. The company’s goal is to provide farmers with more accurate soil information, faster reporting, and stronger decision-making support. SWAT LABS represents an important step toward building a fully integrated, data-focused soil testing system that supports productivity, sustainability, and modern agriculture across Western Canada.
