10) Woolwich petition urges council to protect farmland

Proposed Gateway lands

A proposal to redesignate 107 acres of agricultural land in Woolwich Township for employment and industrial development is drawing increasing opposition from residents and farmland advocates.

According to reports presented to township council, a petition opposing the project has attracted signatures from people both near the proposed site and across Waterloo Region.

Opponents argue that productive agricultural land should remain in farming rather than be converted to urban uses.

Advocates for farmland protection argue that preserving high-quality agricultural soils is becoming increasingly important as producers face challenges ranging from population growth and food demand to climate uncertainty and evolving supply chains.
