Flash Drought Threat Grows Across Southern Plains as Historic El Niño Builds

New forecasts point to expanding drought, persistent southern heat, and a potentially wetter autumn as a historic El Niño gains strength.

After flooding, a derecho, storms, and wildfire smoke, a significant shift in North America's weather pattern is creating a new set of challenges for farmers, with forecasters warning that flash drought conditions are becoming a growing concern across key agricultural regions of the United States.

After weeks of widespread moisture driven by the Bermuda High and a steady flow of Gulf moisture, Nutrien's Weekly Weather Intelligence Report's meteorologist Eric Snodgrass reports that pattern has now weakened. While thunderstorms and severe weather remain in localized areas, the large-scale moisture supply that delivered frequent heavy rains has largely shut down for now.

While isolated storms remain possible in several regions, forecasters indicate that the broad moisture pipeline responsible for repeated heavy rainfall events has temporarily shut down. That change is creating sharply different conditions across the continent.

The most notable contrast is developing along a strong thermal boundary stretching across the United States. Cooler and wetter conditions continue across portions of the northern tier, while excessive heat warnings and watches remain in place across much of the South. Temperatures in Oklahoma are expected to reach between 100°F and 109°F this week, adding further stress to crops and pastures already facing moisture shortages.

For many agricultural markets, flash drought may now be the weather story to watch.

Unlike traditional droughts that develop over months, flash droughts emerge rapidly when high temperatures, low humidity, and limited rainfall combine to quickly deplete soil moisture. Forecasters report that vegetation health indicators have dropped to record lows in Oklahoma and are approaching record lows in Texas. Conditions in Colorado also remain near the bottom of historical rankings for crop health and vegetation performance.

In contrast, major Corn Belt states including Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana continue to maintain above-average crop conditions thanks to more favourable rainfall patterns earlier in the growing season.

Looking ahead over the next two weeks, the best chances for significant rainfall are expected across portions of the Midwest, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic region, Carolinas, and Florida. Some areas could receive more than an inch of precipitation, helping to maintain soil moisture levels as crops approach maturity.

Northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, and Michigan's Upper Peninsula are also expected to see improved moisture conditions following an extended dry stretch.

Meanwhile, the outlook remains considerably less favourable for farmers across the Southern Plains. Forecast models suggest that parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and neighbouring regions could receive little to no meaningful rainfall during the next 15 days. Areas of Montana, the western Dakotas, and parts of the Pacific Northwest are also projected to remain drier than normal.

Weather analysts note that while heat may also expand into portions of the Canadian Prairies and western North America, the agricultural threat is not as severe as it would have been during the peak of summer. With crops advancing toward maturity and daylight hours shortening, late-August heat generally poses less risk than similar temperatures experienced earlier in the season.

Beyond the immediate forecast, attention is increasingly shifting toward September and the autumn harvest season.

Longer-range outlooks suggest a transition toward a wetter weather pattern across much of the southern United States. Forecasts are beginning to indicate a classic El Niño-driven shift, where currently dry areas across the southern tier of the country could experience increased precipitation during late September and October.

That development could have important implications for harvest progress, winter wheat seeding, and fieldwork across many regions.

Meteorologists are also closely monitoring what is shaping up to be an exceptionally strong El Niño event. Current ocean temperature anomalies are already exceeding levels typically observed during peak El Niño winters. Experts indicate the event is still strengthening and has the potential to rank among the strongest ever recorded.

If current projections hold, much of the southern two-thirds of the United States could experience wetter-than-normal conditions through the fall season. Similar forecasts point to drier conditions in parts of South America's northern growing regions while southern production areas could become wetter as soybean planting begins.

The evolving forecast presents both opportunities and risks. Near-term flood concerns have diminished, but rapidly expanding drought conditions across the Southern Plains may place additional pressure on crops, forage supplies, and soil moisture reserves.

At the same time, a strengthening El Niño raises the possibility of a wetter harvest season across many key production regions, creating another weather variable producers will need to monitor closely as crops move toward maturity.

The immediate threat may be shifting from flooding to drought, but farmers know, the weather remains firmly in control of the agricultural outlook heading into the final weeks of the growing season.
