Canadian agriculture minister meets Iowa and U.S. farm leaders to reinforce cross-border trade, supply chains, and agricultural cooperation.

Canada’s agriculture sector took center stage at one of America’s most recognized agricultural events as Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Heath MacDonald travelled to the Iowa State Fair to promote closer ties between Canadian and U.S. farm industries.

Joined by Canada’s Ambassador to the United States, Mark Wiseman, MacDonald met with government officials, farm leaders, and industry stakeholders during the fair, emphasizing the value of the long-standing agricultural partnership between the two countries.

The Iowa State Fair is widely regarded as a gathering place for producers, agribusinesses, policymakers, and rural communities. During the event, MacDonald highlighted Canada’s position as a dependable trading partner and underscored the importance of maintaining strong agricultural connections between the neighbouring countries.

The discussions come at a time when agriculture remains one of the most integrated sectors in North America. In 2025, the Canada-U.S. agriculture, agri-food, and seafood trading relationship was valued at $101.2 billion, reflecting the significant movement of food products, livestock, ingredients, and agricultural inputs across the border.

A key stop during the visit was a meeting with Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds. The two discussed the close economic relationship between Canada and Iowa and the role agriculture plays in supporting jobs, economic activity, and food production in both jurisdictions. MacDonald also attended the Governor’s Charity Steer Show, one of the fair’s signature agricultural events.

Iowa continues to be an important agricultural partner for Canada. Canada ranks as Iowa’s second-largest agriculture and agri-food export market. Bilateral agriculture, agri-food, and seafood trade between Canada and Iowa reached approximately $3 billion CAD in 2025.

MacDonald also connected with several influential U.S. agricultural leaders, including Glenn “G.T.” Thompson, chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, and Brent Johnson, president of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. Discussions focused on shared priorities affecting producers, including the need to support farm profitability, strengthen rural economies, and maintain productive trade relationships.

Another meeting brought together MacDonald and Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, where the two exchanged views on issues of mutual interest and the highly integrated agricultural relationship between Canada and Iowa. The pair also participated in a Celebrity Pork Grilling Event, highlighting the importance of livestock and value-added agriculture within the region.

Beyond meetings with farm organizations and government officials, MacDonald took part in roundtable discussions involving agricultural and manufacturing stakeholders. Those conversations focused on Canada’s contribution to North American supply chains and the country’s role as a supplier of high-quality, affordable agricultural products and production inputs.

The visit reflects ongoing efforts by both countries to reinforce agricultural cooperation at a time when supply chain reliability, market access, and food security remain top priorities throughout the sector.

For Canadian producers, the United States remains a critical export destination, while American agriculture benefits from access to Canadian markets and products. Leaders on both sides of the border continue to stress that the highly integrated nature of the North American agricultural economy creates opportunities that support farm businesses, processors, manufacturers, and consumers alike.
