Former Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart passed away at the age of 73 after a long battle with cancer.

Premier Scott Moe posted about Stewart’s passing on X on Tuesday.

“His quiet strength and dedication to the people he served were an example to all of us who served with him,” part of his post said, adding that flags at the legislature would be lowered to half-mast.

Stewart served as the MLA for Thunder Creek and Lumsden-Morse beginning in 1999.

In 2012 he became the minister of agriculture and held that position until 2018 under Premiers Brad Wall and Scott Moe.

Stewart was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014 but stayed on as minister of agriculture.

He resigned from cabinet in 2018 following a colon cancer diagnosis but stayed on as an MLA.

He announced his resignation from politics in 2023.

His tenure in Saskatchewan politics included stints as minister of enterprise and innovation, provincial secretary and the legislative secretary for provincial autonomy.

Members of the ag community took to social media to express condolences and thank Stewart for his industry support.

“On behalf of the Wheat Growers Association, we offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of Lyle Stewart. He was a steadfast supporter of our organization and a passionate advocate for agriculture,” the organization said on X. “It was an honor to work alongside someone who cared so deeply about our cause.”

“Lyle Stewart served Saskatchewan with a perfect blend of toughness when required and honesty and dignity at all times,” Todd McIntyre, a Saskatchewan horse trainer, said on X. “Rest easy, Lyle.”

“Minister Stewart was a fantastic AG Minister in Saskatchewan,” Sask farmer Daryl Fransoo said online. “He truly and deeply cared about our industry. He was one of the great ones. Condolences to his family and loved ones. RIP Minister Stewart.”
