The provincial government launched the ACRE program to support businesses
The Saskatchewan government launched a new program to connect agtech businesses with local farmers interested in testing new products in development.
The Agtech Commercialization Readiness (ACRE) program through Innovation Saskatchewan will provide startups with up to $30,000 to pilot and validate agtech in true on-farm environments around Saskatchewan.
"Saskatchewan is home to some of the world's most innovative agtech companies developing solutions for the future of agriculture," Innovation Saskatchewan Minister Warren Kaeding said in an Oct. 29 statement. "By helping more Saskatchewan-made technologies reach the market, ACRE will create new economic opportunities and strengthen Saskatchewan's leadership in agricultural innovation."
Eligible startups must have a technology or product at least in technology ready level 6 as per Innovation Canada’s definitions.
Level 6 means “a model or prototype that represents a near desired configuration. Activities include testing in a simulated operational environment or laboratory.”
Startups are eligible for funding if a project partner is involved to provide matching contributions.
Suitable project partners include input and equipment retailers, and producer groups.
If, for example, a project requires $60,000 in funding, ACRE will release $30,000 if an eligible partner will also invest $30,000.
The Saskatchewan Cattle Association voiced its support for ACRE.
"Cattle producers are the original innovators, and producers are increasingly interested in using innovative tools with practical, on-farm applications that can address concerns such as animal identification, environmental sustainability, water quality, animal health, and forage productivity," Christine Strube, the organization’s research chair, said in the statement.
Startups can use funding to support salaries, travel and accommodations for project needs, and costs associated with intellectual property.
Grants cannot be used for expenses like land, building, or equipment purchases.
The application window is open now. Innovation Saskatchewan is targeting Nov. 30 for application responses.
