Community Funding Supports Health Education Food Access and Local Projects
Supporting local communities has long been an important part of Hensall Co-op's mission. Through its Strong Communities Initiative, the agricultural cooperative has contributed more than $180,000 to nonprofit organizations over the past six years. The program focuses on helping groups that improve the lives of people living in rural areas across Ontario and Manitoba.
In 2026, the initiative provided a total of $30,000 in funding to six nonprofit organizations working on projects that address important community needs. These projects focus on youth development, health and wellness, food accessibility, and improvements to local facilities. The funding reflects the cooperative's commitment to creating stronger and more connected communities.
The program received a record number of applications this year, showing the growing need for financial support among community organizations. Despite the increasing demand, Hensall Co-op continues to invest in projects that provide meaningful benefits to local residents and help solve everyday challenges faced by rural communities.
According to company leadership, supporting organizations that work to improve community well-being remains a key priority. The cooperative believes these groups play an important role in creating positive change and helping individuals and families access essential services and opportunities.
“We received an unprecedented number of applications for our Strong Communities Initiative this year and were able to provide funding to six not-for-profit organizations in Ontario and Manitoba totalling $30,000.00. The need to continue to support individuals and groups that are stepping up is something we hope to be able to continue to do for as long as possible,” said Brad Chandler, CEO of Hensall Co-op.
A major portion of this year's funding was directed toward two organizations that each received $10,000 grants. One of the projects involves the development of an improved community wellness space in rural Manitoba. The funding will help create a more accessible and welcoming location where residents can connect with health services, social support programs, housing assistance and other important resources.
The upgraded facility will include new furnishings, flexible meeting spaces, and equipment that can support community activities and gatherings. The goal is to create a safe and inclusive environment where residents can easily find support and access services that contribute to their well-being.
Another significant grant was awarded to a rural elementary school in Ontario. The funding will support the replacement of aging playground equipment that has reached the end of its service life. The new playground will feature updated and accessible structures designed to create a safer and more enjoyable environment for children.
By improving recreational facilities, the project will provide students with greater opportunities for physical activity, social interaction, and outdoor learning. The investment also helps ensure that children of varying abilities can participate in playground activities.
In addition to the two larger grants, four other organizations each received funding to support community-focused initiatives. These projects include mental health awareness programs, food bank improvements, healthcare enhancements, and upgrades to community gathering facilities. Each initiative addresses a specific need while contributing to the overall strength and resilience of rural communities.
The Strong Communities Initiative demonstrates how local businesses and agricultural organizations can make a positive impact beyond their core operations.
