New Meter Upgrade Boosts Accuracy and Efficiency

2026 is the year of John Deere planter upgrades.

The company recently announced innovative upgrade kits to enhance planting accuracy, efficiency, and speed.

Available for the 2026 model year, these upgrades include the MaxEmerge 5e and ExactEmerge options. They are specifically designed to improve the planting performance of existing John Deere planters.

Farms.com met with Kyle Barry, manager of precision upgrades marketing with John Deere, to discuss these new offerings and what it brings to the table for farmers.

The MaxEmerge 5e upgrade is ideal for farmers who own John Deere planters manufactured in 2015 or later. It enhances planting accuracy by up to 20%, ensuring seeds are placed precisely, even when navigating corners or waterways.

Farmers will benefit significantly from its ability to control seed placement at an individual row level. This upgrade is particularly useful for planting speeds of around five miles per hour.

For farmers who need higher-speed planting solutions, John Deere offers the ExactEmerge upgrade.

Featuring brush belt technology, this upgrade accurately handles seeds like corn, soybeans, and cotton. It precisely delivers seeds into planting trenches at higher speeds, ensuring uniform crop growth.

Traditionally, John Deere required farmers to purchase entire new row units. However, these latest upgrades allow farmers to replace only the meter portion of their existing row units.

Farmers with older planters, specifically models from 2014 and earlier, can benefit from the Ultimate Planter Upgrade. This complete row-unit replacement incorporates advanced meter technology paired with customized downforce solutions, said Barry.

Farmers can choose between active pneumatic or individual row hydraulic downforce to optimize planting conditions.

The customization doesn't stop there.

“You can pick your gauge wheels, your row cleaners, the closing wheel options that you prefer—really make that kit exactly what you want,” adds Bary.

Each new factory row unit comes with a one-year warranty and is compatible with John Deere toolbars dating back to model year 2005.

These planter upgrades promise enhanced accuracy, higher productivity, and greater flexibility for farmers seeking improved planting performance.

Dicamba Returns for Georgia Farmers: What the New EPA Ruling Means for Cotton Growers

Video: Dicamba Returns for Georgia Farmers: What the New EPA Ruling Means for Cotton Growers

After being unavailable in 2024 due to registration issues, dicamba products are returning for Georgia farmers this growing season — but under strict new conditions.

In this report from Tifton, Extension Weed Specialist Stanley Culpepper explains the updated EPA ruling, including new application limits, mandatory training requirements, and the need for a restricted use pesticide license. Among the key changes: a cap of two ½-pound applications per year and the required use of an approved volatility reduction agent with every application.

For Georgia cotton producers, the ruling is significant. According to Taylor Sills with the Georgia Cotton Commission, the vast majority of cotton planted in the state carries the dicamba-tolerant trait — meaning farmers had been paying for technology they couldn’t use.

While environmental groups have expressed concerns over spray drift, Georgia growers have reduced off-target pesticide movement by more than 91% over the past decade. Still, this two-year registration period will come with increased scrutiny, making stewardship and compliance more important than ever.
