Stakeholders discuss Canada’s Next Policy Framework 2028–2033 with AAFC process

Manitoba farm groups and industry associations recently met with federal and provincial representatives to discuss the upcoming Next Policy Framework for agriculture in Canada. The discussions included Manitoba Pork, Keystone Agricultural Producers, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), and Members of Parliament who are helping shape future agricultural policy.

"Collaborative conversations like these are key to shaping a strong, sustainable future for Manitoba agriculture," said the association linked in.

This framework will replace the current Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, which runs from 2023 to 2028 and guides federal, provincial, and territorial agriculture programs. Industry feedback and nationwide consultations led by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada are being collected from farmers, processors, Indigenous communities, youth, and women.

The consultation process began in January 2026 and will continue until December 2027 to gather input on challenges and opportunities in the agriculture sector. This feedback will help shape a five-year policy framework aimed at strengthening sustainability, growth, and innovation across Canada’s agriculture and agri-food systems.

The policy framework is expected to be announced by federal, provincial, and territorial agriculture ministers in July 2026 following extensive stakeholder engagement. Stakeholders emphasize collaboration as essential for addressing emerging challenges such as climate change, trade uncertainty, and input cost pressures affecting farmers nationwide.

Consultations are open across Canada and include input from multiple sectors to ensure the framework supports long-term resilience and competitiveness in agriculture. These efforts aim to build a strong and sustainable agriculture sector that benefits producers, rural communities, and the national economy.

Key priorities include innovation adoption, risk management tools, market development, and support for new and young farmers entering the industry. Final outcomes from the Next Policy Framework consultations will guide future agricultural programs and investments across federal, provincial, and territorial governments.

Industry leaders continue to stress the importance of ongoing dialogue between government and farm organizations during the policy development process. Officials say continued engagement will ensure that the framework reflects real-world conditions faced by farmers and agribusinesses.

The process is designed to support long-term stability and growth in the Canadian agriculture sector through collaborative policymaking. Stakeholders remain engaged as consultations continue across regions to ensure inclusive and effective agricultural policy for the future in Canada.
