Nebraska Iowa Win Big Innovation Grant

A major partnership involving nearly 70 organizations across Nebraska and Iowa has received federal funding to help grow the region’s bioeconomy and create new opportunities for rural communities.

The initiative, known as RuralSTAMINA, is led by Iowa State University and includes universities, community colleges, government agencies, businesses, and economic development organizations. The project received $15 million from the National Science Foundation and could receive additional support over the next decade based on its progress.

The program focuses on developing new products from agricultural resources through biomass conversion and biomanufacturing. Leaders believe the initiative will help create added value for crops and other agricultural commodities produced in the region.

Nebraska and Iowa represent one of the largest agricultural economies in the United States. Through RuralSTAMINA, partners aim to strengthen this position by encouraging innovation, attracting investment, and supporting business growth.

A key goal of the project is workforce development. The partnership will connect K-12 schools, tribal colleges, community colleges, universities, and industry groups to help students prepare for careers in emerging agricultural and manufacturing fields.

Education leaders say the initiative will provide students with better access to career pathways while helping employers find skilled workers. The program is also expected to support research and technology development that could shape the future of the bioeconomy.

Government officials and university leaders have praised the effort, noting that it has the potential to increase demand for agricultural products, create high-quality jobs, and strengthen rural economies in both states.

The project was selected through a highly competitive process that began with hundreds of proposals from across the United States. Organizers believe the collaboration will accelerate innovation and position Nebraska and Iowa as leaders in the growing global bioeconomy.

By bringing together education, industry, government, and investors, RuralSTAMINA aims to build a stronger future for agriculture while supporting economic growth throughout the Midwest.

Alberta Honey: A Day at Molenkamp Honey Farms

Video: Alberta Honey: A Day at Molenkamp Honey Farms

When was the last time you read the label on your honey?

We spent a day at Molenkamp Honey Farms with Michael Molenkamp, who has been keeping bees for 17 seasons and runs three to four thousand hives. In mid-September, he was finishing treatments and getting his bees ready for winter, and he walked us through how Alberta honey gets made.

Alberta has just 150 commercial beekeepers running 300,000 colonies, and together they produce 40% of Canada’s honey. Long summer days and golden canola fields give Alberta honey a light flavour that’s hard to match anywhere else.

Molenkamp calls Alberta beekeepers some of the most resilient farmers he knows. There’s plenty of Alberta honey to go around, but a lot on our shelves isn’t from here, so his ask is simple. Give the label a second look and choose honey made by Alberta beekeepers, or buy straight from a beekeeper near you.
