People under 16 can operate machinery on a private farm if adults determine competence
Farms.com is continuing its dive into insurance and road rule requirements with respect to farm equipment in different parts of Canada.
This article pertains to Alberta’s ag community.
Do Albertans need a license to drive a tractor?
Alberta farmers do not need a license to drive a tractor whether it’s on public land or private roads.
Tractor operators must be at least 16 years old to drive on public roads.
Anyone under that age can operate equipment on private land if an employer or parent determines whether he or she is competent enough.
What is mandatory for operating farm equipment on a public road?
Equipment moving at 40km/h or slower must have a SMV sign.
When traveling at night, which in Alberta is defined as between one hour after sunset and one hour before sunrise, equipment must have at least two but no more than four front head lamps.
If the equipment is wider than 2.6 metres, warning lights showing amber on the front and red on the back must be mounted.
Two red tail lamps are also mandatory.
Pilot vehicles are recommended if the equipment is wider than 3.85 metres.
The Unverferth Perfecta, for example, can be ordered in widths up to 12.2 metres.
Is insurance mandatory for farm equipment in Alberta?
There’s no legal requirement to insure farm equipment but it is highly recommended.
That’s because financial lenders like the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation and major banks require insurance for financed farm equipment.
Insurance providers like MMI Insurance and Westland Insurance can support farmers with farm and equipment insurance needs.
These packages can help protect equipment, homes, buildings, livestock, and other assets.
Policy costs can differ based on multiple variables. Farmers are encouraged to connect with brokers for specific quotes.
