The CWFIS has counted 719 wildfires already in 2026

It is wildfire season in Canada.

The Canadian Wildland Fire Information System (CWFIS) has already counted 719 fires in 2026.

As of May 7, there are 66 active wildfires with one in B.C. deemed out of control.

Wildfires can be dangerous to farm operations as they put people, livestock, crops, buildings, and equipment at risk.

Then Kenaston volunteer fire department in Saskatchewan, for example, responded to multiple fires last weekend.

Firefighters confirmed that equipment, a car exhaust, and an outdoor cookout, caused the fires to start.

Here’s a list of resources farmers can consult to keep themselves and their operations safe during wildfire season:

These provincial resources can provide up to date information about where the wildfires are, how to report one, what is contributing to the wildfires, and any burn bans or restrictions that may be in place.

Helping to keep a farm safe from wildfire danger can start with a checklist.

Here are some things to consider:

  • Do you have fire extinguishers in barns, buildings, and equipment? Are they in working order?
  • Check cables and other electronic equipment for signs of wear or damage.
  • Identify exits and establish a safe meeting spot on the farm.
  • Make arrangements in the event livestock evacuation is necessary.
  • Remove debris or flammable material from potential heat sources.
  • Ensure insurance policies are up to date and provide adequate coverage.
