2025 report highlights circular economy progress and emissions reductions
Synagro has released its 2025 Sustainability Report, marking 40 years of providing sustainable solutions for biosolids, organics, and residual materials. The report highlights the company's ongoing efforts to improve resource management through innovative circular economy practices.
The report focuses on transforming waste materials into valuable resources rather than sending them to landfills. By using advanced technologies, partnerships, and efficient resource management strategies, the company aims to support both environmental and economic sustainability.
During 2025, Synagro helped municipal and agricultural customers avoid more than two million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. This was achieved by converting residual materials into nutrient-rich fertilizers that can be beneficially used in agriculture. The environmental impact is significant and demonstrates the growing value of circular resource management.
"Over our 40-year history, we have always led with our purpose: to clean water, regenerate soil and have a net positive impact on people and the planet," said Bob Preston, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Synagro. "Last year we grew our business again and invested in new facilities, technologies and partnerships to ensure this growth remains sustainable."
The company reported managing more than 17 million tons of residuals during the year, with over 80% directed toward beneficial use. Since 2023, greenhouse gas emissions from operations have declined by 10%. Safety performance also improved, with a reduction in total recordable incident rates exceeding 30% compared to previous levels.
The report also outlines investments in facilities, technologies, and partnerships designed to support future growth. These efforts are helping strengthen local resource systems while creating long-term value for customers and stakeholders.
Synagro's sustainability strategy is built around three key pillars: a Greener World, Passionate People, and Transparent Integrity. The company says these priorities guide its environmental, social, and operational goals.
"Sustainability is the cornerstone of value creation at Synagro," said Kip Cleverley, Chief Sustainability Officer, Synagro. "We believe that being a sustainable company is the right thing to do — for the planet, for people and for our long-term success."
In addition to environmental achievements, Synagro received workplace recognition from USA TODAY and The Baltimore Sun, highlighting its focus on employee engagement and organizational culture.
The 2025 Sustainability Report demonstrates how circular economy practices can support cleaner water, healthier soils, reduced emissions, and stronger communities. As demand for sustainable waste management solutions grows, the company plans to continue expanding its environmental initiatives while helping customers meet their sustainability objectives.
