Producer survey data strengthens August crop production outlook
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has completed data collection for its Agricultural Yield Survey, an important step in preparing the August Crop Production report. The report provides one of the first nationwide forecasts of the 2026 crop season and offers valuable information for the agricultural industry.
The August Crop Production report helps farmers make important decisions related to crop marketing, production planning, and risk management during the growing season. It is also widely used by grain handlers, processors, exporters, input suppliers, lenders, crop insurance providers, researchers, commodity groups, and policymakers.
This year, the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) continued to rely on producer-reported yield information as the foundation of its crop forecasts. At the same time, the agency increased its use of acreage data collected by the Farm Service Agency (FSA).
By combining these data sources with established statistical methods, USDA aims to improve the accuracy, objectivity, and reliability of agricultural statistics.
The updated approach allows USDA to make better use of information that producers have already provided while reducing unnecessary reporting requirements. Farmers can focus on sharing critical information about crop yields and growing conditions, helping NASS create timely and dependable forecasts.
“Producer participation in the Agricultural Yield Survey makes a difference in the quality of USDA’s data. This year's August Crop Production report not only reflects data from the Agricultural Yield Survey, but it also builds on our commitment to producers to make better use of information already available, reduce unnecessary reporting, and continue delivering the trusted statistics on which agriculture depends,” said Deputy Secretary Stephen Alexander Vaden.
He added, “By combining producer-reported yield information with FSA acreage data and sound statistical methods, USDA is improving the quality, objectivity, and integrity of our agricultural statistics.”
Producer participation remains a key part of the process. Information provided by farmers from across the country helps ensure that USDA reports accurately reflect conditions throughout American agriculture. These reports are widely trusted and support decision-making throughout the agricultural supply chain.
