IDFA highlights Uzbekistan as a promising market for dairy exports

The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) has released a new report highlighting Central Asia as an emerging region for future U.S. dairy export growth.

The report is the second publication under IDFA's Project Diversify initiative, a program designed to identify high-potential international markets for U.S. dairy products. With U.S. dairy exports reaching nearly $10 billion annually, the industry is seeking new opportunities to support long-term growth.

According to the report, Uzbekistan stands out as the strongest near-term opportunity in Central Asia. The country was recognized for its steady economic growth, rising consumer demand, and favorable business environment. Growing commercial ties between the United States and Uzbekistan have also strengthened its outlook for future dairy trade.

“The next phase of U.S. dairy export growth will come from both strengthening existing markets and pursuing new opportunities around the world," said Michael Dykes, D.V.M., president and CEO of IDFA. "Project Diversify helps the industry do exactly that—applying a data-driven framework to inform strategic decision-making, and position U.S. dairy to compete and win in high-potential regions."

The study notes that Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan offer encouraging long-term opportunities. Both countries are investing in infrastructure improvements, digital development, and financial reforms that could support future market expansion. However, the report also points out that their economic and political connections with China and Russia may create challenges for exporters.

IDFA leaders said the initiative uses data-based analysis to help companies make informed export decisions and identify regions where dairy demand is increasing. The organization believes future growth will come from both strengthening existing export markets and developing new ones.

This latest analysis builds on Project Diversify's earlier report focused on Western Africa. The initiative aims to help dairy businesses evaluate new export destinations and better understand changing global market conditions.

“While Central Asia may not be among the first regions U.S. dairy exporters consider, our analysis shows it deserves greater attention," said Becky Rasdall Vargas, senior vice president of trade and workforce policy at IDFA.

She added, "Uzbekistan stands out for its strong economic fundamentals, growing consumer demand and expanding commercial ties with the United States – something we have shared with U.S. officials engaging in negotiations with Uzbekistan.  We look forward to supporting the advancement of those negotiations through the release of this report, which we hope will also help companies make strategic, data-based export investment decisions."

Future phases of Project Diversify will examine other regions worldwide and introduce interactive tools that allow users to compare market performance, regional trends, and product opportunities. These resources are expected to support strategic planning and long-term export growth for the U.S. dairy sector.

As global demand for dairy products continues to evolve, Central Asia is becoming a region worth watching for future trade and investment opportunities.
