Dairy leaders strengthen trade ties and support future farmers
Dairy industry leaders from the United States and Mexico have reaffirmed their commitment to working together to strengthen the dairy sector in both countries. The agreement was reached during the 2026 U.S.-Mexico Binational Dairy Summit held from July 29 to 31 in Querétaro, Mexico.
The annual event brought together representatives from major dairy organizations, including the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF), the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC), and leading dairy groups from Mexico. Discussions focused on issues affecting dairy farmers, processors, and consumers in both countries.
“The dairy trade relationship between the United States and Mexico is a true success story as our industries have grown in parallel for over three decades” said Gregg Doud, president and CEO of NMPF. “Central to that success is an open dialogue. We look forward to continuing work together to address shared challenges and develop our markets together.”
Participants highlighted the importance of maintaining strong trade relationships, encouraging innovation, and improving the competitiveness of the dairy industry. The organizations agreed that continued cooperation is essential for long-term growth and stability.
A key outcome of this year's summit was the adoption of a new shared principle focused on supporting the next generation of dairy farmers. Leaders emphasized the importance of sharing knowledge, experiences, and best practices while creating opportunities for young producers to succeed in the dairy sector.
Industry representatives also stressed the value of open communication between the two countries. They noted that cooperation has helped strengthen dairy markets and improve opportunities for dairy businesses over many years.
Another major topic was promoting the nutritional benefits of dairy products and encouraging consumer awareness. Leaders agreed that working together can help meet growing demand while strengthening the dairy industry on both sides of the border.

We appreciate Mexico hosting this important event and we look forward to maintaining this critical relationship to support our farmers on both sides of the border.”
The summit took place shortly after the third round of U.S.-Mexico discussions related to the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Dairy organizations participated as advisors during the process and emphasized the importance of ongoing industry involvement in trade discussions.
Looking ahead, the groups pledged to continue their collaboration on trade, innovation, nutrition, and farmer development. Participants agreed that strong partnerships will help ensure a successful future for dairy producers and rural communities in both countries.
