New $180 million initiative aims to strengthen crop genetics and support future farm innovation
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a major investment designed to strengthen the future of American agriculture. The new Seed Sovereignty Initiative includes $180 million in funding to improve the nation's understanding and use of important crop genetic resources.
The initiative focuses on protecting and advancing plant genetics, which plays a key role in food production, crop improvement, and agricultural innovation. USDA officials say the investment will help the country become more self-reliant while supporting farmers with better tools and resources for future challenges.
A major part of the funding will support USDA's Agricultural Research Service and its National Plant Germplasm System. This large collection contains more than 600,000 plant samples from over 16,000 species. These genetic resources serve as an important foundation for crop breeding, research, and agricultural development.
“Since President Trump returned to office, he has made it clear that we are putting American farmers first. For too long, the future of our crops and our seeds has not been a priority. That changes today, because we cannot afford to depend on foreign adversaries for next year’s crop,” said Brooke L. Rollins.
She added, “Today’s announcement is another example of this administration focusing on the inputs our agriculture industry depends on and ensuring a future where our farmers are the most productive in the world.”
Over the next two years, USDA plans to sequence and analyze many of these collections. Modern genetic sequencing will help researchers better understand crop traits and identify opportunities to improve plant performance. The effort is expected to provide valuable information that can be used by plant breeders, researchers, and the broader agricultural industry.
Officials say understanding plant genetics is becoming increasingly important as farmers face challenges such as changing weather conditions, pests, diseases, and rising production demands. Access to detailed genetic information can help accelerate the development of stronger and more resilient crop varieties.
“America’s agricultural resources are a strategic national asset,” said Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden. “We need to survey our domestic resources, understand where we are vulnerable, and ensure the United States never has to rely on foreign competitors for critical agricultural resources.”
The initiative will also use advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, to identify valuable genetic traits. By combining genetic data with modern analytical tools, researchers can discover characteristics that improve productivity, resilience, and sustainability.
USDA leaders noted that many countries around the world are investing heavily in genetic research and agricultural technologies. The new initiative is intended to ensure the United States remains competitive while reducing future dependence on external sources for critical agricultural resources.
Improved knowledge of crop genetics can also help researchers respond more quickly when new threats emerge. Early identification of beneficial traits could improve disease resistance, pest management, and environmental adaptability across a range of crops.
Beyond research investments, USDA is expanding cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice to support competition in agricultural input markets. The partnership will continue to focus on the seed sector with the goal of improving transparency and marketplace fairness.
“The National Plant Germplasm System contains tremendous untapped potential for American agriculture,” said Dr. Scott Hutchins, USDA Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics and Chief Scientist. “Modern sequencing will allow us to unlock that potential and put it to work for American farmers, providing them a strong advantage.”
Officials believe stronger competition can provide farmers with more choices when purchasing seeds and other essential agricultural products. Increased transparency may also help create a more efficient and competitive market environment.
The Seed Sovereignty Initiative represents a shift from simply preserving plant genetic resources to actively studying and using them to strengthen agricultural production. By improving access to genetic information, USDA hopes to unlock the full value of these resources for future generations.
As agriculture continues to evolve, investments in science, technology, and seed development are expected to play a growing role in maintaining food security. USDA officials say the initiative will help ensure farmers have access to the knowledge and innovations needed to remain productive and competitive in the years ahead.
