Why Proper Chicken Litter Spreading Matters for Crop Yields

Field research shows that consistent poultry litter application and proper fertilizer management play a key role in improving crop growth

Chicken litter has become an important nutrient source for many farmers, in states like Kentucky and others, because it provides an affordable alternative to commercial fertilizers.

According to the University of Kentucky’s AGR-168 publication, poultry litter contains valuable nutrients, including nitrogen, phosphate, potash, and several secondary and micronutrients that support crop growth.

Although plants cannot access all nutrients in litter immediately, applying several tons per acre can still contribute significantly to a crop’s overall fertility requirements.

However, the effectiveness of chicken litter depends on several factors, including soil conditions, nutrient release, litter quality, and how accurately it is applied.

A Kentucky field study examined the performance of chicken litter after a grower applied three tons per acre following drainage tile installation and extensive land leveling.

Researchers also established comparison areas treated with ammonium sulfate (AMS) and diammonium phosphate (DAP) before planting to evaluate differences in nutrient availability.

Using aerial images collected in late May, researchers measured crop health with the Triangular Greenness Index (TGI), which evaluates vegetation color and chlorophyll activity.

The imagery showed stronger crop growth in areas that received additional commercial fertilizer compared with fields that relied only on chicken litter. Researchers noted that soil disturbance from recent field improvements may have contributed to some differences.

The images also revealed clear patterns related to litter spreading. Crop growth followed the same paths as the fertilizer application, with stronger vegetation where more litter was deposited and weaker growth in areas that received less material.

Uneven spreading was likely influenced by outdoor litter storage, where rainfall increased moisture levels and affected application consistency.

The results demonstrate that successful poultry litter use requires careful management. Farmers can improve nutrient efficiency by storing litter properly, checking moisture content, calibrating application equipment, and confirming even distribution across fields.

Later-season aerial imagery also showed crop striping linked to AMS and DAP applications, suggesting possible issues with spreader settings, swath width, or fertilizer uniformity.

Proper equipment maintenance and accurate application practices remain essential for improving crop performance and maximizing fertilizer investments.
