New female farmer category added to Demeter Award for 2026

Women in Agribusiness, in partnership with the American Farm Bureau Federation, has expanded its prestigious Demeter Award to include a new female farmer category. This announcement aligns with the International Year of the Woman Farmer, drawing attention to women’s vital role in agriculture.

The Demeter Award of Excellence has recognized outstanding women in agribusiness since 2013. The new category joins three existing awards that honor women who show exceptional achievement and lasting impact in the ag and food sectors.

“American Farm Bureau Federation’s Women’s Leadership Committee is excited to collaborate with Women in Agribusiness on this year’s female farmer category of the Demeter Award of Excellence,” said Isabella Chism, chair of the AFB Women’s Leadership Committee.

“As we recognize the International Year of the Woman Farmer, this award provides an important opportunity to celebrate the leadership, innovation and contributions of female farmers whose work strengthens the success and sustainability of American agriculture,” said Isabella Chism.

Eligible nominees must have at least 10 years of experience in agriculture or the food industry. The award seeks women who serve as positive role models, demonstrate professionalism, break barriers, and act as resources for others. Self-nominations are also encouraged, making the opportunity accessible to many deserving candidates.

Nominations for the award, including self-nominations, are open to women who meet specific criteria.

  • Eligible candidates must have a minimum of ten years of experience in the agriculture or food industry.

  • Nominees should serve as positive role models, consistently demonstrate professionalism, and actively support and guide others.

  • The award also recognizes women who break barriers and contribute to building a more inclusive and sustainable agricultural sector.

The American Farm Bureau Federation is actively supporting the initiative by promoting nominations within its nationwide network of female farmers. The organization will also assist the award recipient throughout the process, including covering travel and lodging expenses.

Award winners will be honored during the Women in Agribusiness Summit, scheduled for September 22–24 in New Orleans. Each recipient will receive complimentary event registration and formally accept the award on stage.

“It was more than fitting that we extend our popular WIA Demeter Award of Excellence to highlight a female farmer this year in light of the United Nations’ declaration of it being the International Year of the Woman Farmer,” said Svitlana Synkovska, portfolio director for WIA.

“We encourage all women to apply for this prestigious award that continues to flourish and serve as a hallmark of elevating women’s achievements and strengthening their leadership influence across the ag and food sectors,” said Svitlana Synkovska.

Named after Demeter, the ancient Greek goddess of harvest, the award symbolizes dedication, growth, and leadership. This new category reinforces the continued effort to recognize women farmers who strengthen agricultural sustainability and inspire future generations.

Nominations remain open until June 22, offering a significant opportunity to celebrate women shaping the future of farming.
