Ag Minister Sets Provincial Local Food Literacy Goals

The provincial government has established three goals to increase knowledge about local food.

Those goals are to increase the number of people in the province who know what local foods are available , who know how and where to obtain local foods and who know how to prepare local food meals for family and friends.

The government says it will also develop baseline statistics and performance measures to track and report on progress towards those goals.

Agriculture and Food Minister Jeff Leal says it’s part of the Local Food Act.

He says establishing literacy goals and committing to measure progress will ensure more people in Ontario will be able to identify, access and prepare Ontario grown, harvested and made food.

OMAFRA says it’s part of a broader strategy intended to increase demand for Ontario food, creating more jobs and boosting the agri-food industry’s contributions to the provincial economy.
