NASDA President highlights women leadership in agriculture 2026

The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Commissioner Amanda Beal helped launch the global International Year of the Woman Farmer during the 2026 Winter Policy Conference of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture held in Washington, D.C.

Beal, who currently serves as President of NASDA, moderated a national policy panel titled International Year of the Woman Farmer What It Is and Why It Matters. The discussion brought together leading voices from across the agricultural sector to recognize the growing role of women in farming, food systems, and rural economies.

“For Maine, this conversation reflects what we see every day, women leading farms, businesses, and innovation across our agricultural sector,” said Commissioner Beal. “Recognizing their contributions helps to strengthen our farms and ensures that new generations of women will be inspired to choose a career path in agriculture.”

Panelists included U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, Global Farmer Network CEO Mary Boote, and U.S. Dairy Export Council President and CEO Krysta Harden. They discussed leadership development, mentorship opportunities, and policy initiatives that can remove barriers and create equal opportunities for women in agriculture. The conversation focused on practical ways to expand support systems and strengthen pathways for future agricultural leaders.

Conference activities also highlighted a bipartisan resolution in the U.S. Senate recognizing 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer. A national reception was held to celebrate the contributions of women across the agricultural industry.

In addition to NASDA, several major agricultural organizations are aligning their programs with national and international efforts throughout 2026. These efforts include storytelling campaigns, partnerships, and special events aimed at promoting women’s leadership in farming, forestry, and food production.

NASDA continues to serve as a nonpartisan organization representing agriculture leaders from all 50 states and four U.S. territories. Through policy development, partnerships, and public engagement, it works to strengthen American agriculture and support producers nationwide.
