Canadian Livestock Numbers Increase In 2016

In its livestock estimates for January 1, 2017, Statistics Canada says cattle and hog inventories were up compared to the previous year.
 
Canadian farmers had 12.1 million cattle on their farms on January 1, 2917, up 0.2% from January 1, 2016.
 
In Manitoba, cattle numbers were up 1.3% to 1,140.
 
Canadian cattle prices continued to decline in 2016 from the peak levels seen in 2015, however, prices remained above the previous five-year average.
 
On the hog side, producers reported 13.7 million hogs on January first of this year, up 1.6% from January 1, 2016, marking the fourth consecutive year-over-year increase.
 
Hog numbers increased 1.5% in Manitoba in 2016 to 3,130.
