The possibility of creating a farmer-owned and operated seed company was among the principles discussed by Canadian Seed Growers’ Association members this summer as the organization looks ahead to meeting future challenges.
Former CSGA executive director Doug Miller said a working group held during the association’s annual general meeting in Whitehorse in July was a chance for farmers from across the country to discuss the future of plot and plant breeding through developing their own business venture.
There are gaps that are going to exist in the innovation pipeline, and the seed sector relies on a steady stream of high-quality genetics, and that is potentially at risk here,” said Miller.
The session began with panel discussion with three industry professionals on their vision for CSGA members, which introduced the possibility of a farmer-owned and operated seed company. Collaboration across the Canadian seed industry was something mentioned by all panelists, as well as healthy competition between the public and private sides of seed production.
