Carrington Research Extension Center To Host Livestock Tour

Feedlot research and nutrient management are among the topics for this year’s beef production tour.

Feedlot research, cow-calf studies, manure nutrient management, and profitability drivers and strategies will be discussed at the beef production tour during the North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center’s annual field tours July 15.

The beef production program will begin at 9 a.m. with registration, coffee and a welcome. The livestock tour will depart at 9:30 and run until noon. Agronomy, horticulture and sustainability tours also will be held in the morning.

Vern Anderson, retired animal scientist at the center, will host the beef production tour. Topics and speakers for this year’s program are:

  • A profitable cow herd: What puts you in the black? - Jory Hansen, farm business management instructor, Carrington Research Extension Center
  • Reducing breeding herd costs via reproductive strategies - Carl Dahlen, Extension beef cattle specialist, NDSU Animal Sciences Department, Fargo
  • Feeding the cow herd I: Whole-farm forage resource management - Nathan Spickler, Spickler Ranch, Glenfield
  • Feeding the cow herd II: Using corn stover in drylot cow production - Anderson
  • Manure as a resource (not a waste) - Mary Berg, nutrient management specialist, Carrington Research Extension Center
  • What’s happening in the feedlot I: Producer feedout results, Dakota Feeder Calf Show and North Dakota Angus University - Karl Hoppe, area Extension livestock specialist, Carrington Research Extension Center
  • What’s happening in the feedlot II: Sugar (fodder) beets, corn particle size, fat levels in distillers grains, corn tempering and unmanned aerial system updates - Chanda Engel, research specialist, Carrington Research Extension Center; Anderson; and John Nowatzki, Extension agricultural machine systems specialist, NDSU Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department, Fargo
