The Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute (PAMI) in Humboldt, Sask. is receiving $5 million over five years from the provincial and federal governments through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

The organization works to develop innovative solutions in industries like agriculture, mining, and transportation.

In ag, for example, PAMI specializes in areas including automation, process management and agri-food processing.

The government investments will help support this work.

“This funding will help them continue their great work, and ensure farmers remain on the cutting edge, so they can keep producing top-quality food for Canadians and folks around the world,” Lawrence MacAulay, the federal ag minister, said in a statement.

One example of PAMI’s work is research on sectional control.

PAMI conducted in-field testing during the 2020 growing season of sectional control technologies such as sowing, seeding, and planting equipment.

The study measured seeded overlap acres of different seeding equipment while also measuring the draft force of equipment that lifts the openers when encountering an overlap area.

The PAMI study found that when reviewing the overlap from the equipment monitor and comparing it to the field measurements, the monitor, in most cases, showed a substantially lower overlap amount when compared to what is measured in the field.

And in 2016, the organization studied straight cutting.

PAMI research in partnership with the Indian Head Agricultural Research Foundation discovered that extension headers that allow the cutter bar to be shifted forward hold the advantage for straight cutting.

The government supports will allow the organization to continue making these discoveries to support the ag industry.

“This increased funding will allow PAMI to keep doing what it does best, support the innovation and excellence of agriculture in Saskatchewan and beyond,” PAMI President and CEO Paul Buczkowski said in a statement.

Video: The Future of Regenerative Agriculture

Many Canadian producers and buyers have started to use the term regenerative agriculture. In this webinar we explore why this term is gaining traction and what the future holds. Will regenerative agriculture follow the path of other sustainability claims such as organic and fair trade? Our panelists will explore some of the thorny issues that proponents already face or that they may soon encounter. For example, how will the regenerative agriculture retain its integrity in the minds of consumers? is it scalable? Who will pay farmers for their environmental stewardship?
