The Canola Council of Canada (CCC) and Canadian Canola Growers Association (CCGA) welcome yesterday’s announcement extending the suspension of China’s 100% tariffs on Canadian canola meal for an additional two years.
Under the Preliminary Joint Arrangement reached between Canada and China in January 2026, Canadian canola meal could enter China tariff-free from March 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026. The two-year extension, agreed to at the Canada-China Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETC) meeting in China, extends tariff-free access for canola meal until the end of 2028.
“This extension is welcome news for Canada’s canola industry, providing a much-needed measure of predictability and stability in our trade relationship with China,” says Chris Davison, CCC President & CEO. “We appreciate the continued efforts of Prime Minister Carney, Minister Sidhu and Minister MacDonald in advancing this important trade relationship. Building on the progress made this year, we look forward to continued engagement as we work toward more complete tariff relief for Canadian canola and canola products.”
“We’ve just wrapped up the 2026 harvest and are making marketing decisions for this year’s canola crop,” says Andre Harpe, Chair of CCGA. “At the same time, we’re planning for 2027, with many of our input costs at record highs. Extending tariff-free trade for Canadian canola meal to China is welcome news. It removes one source of uncertainty as canola farmers make decisions that affect their bottom line.”
