Dairy Beef Short Course Set

The course is for dairy beef producers and affiliated industry partners.

The I-29 Dairy Outreach Consortium and Central Plains Dairy Expo have teamed up to offer a short course for dairy beef producers and affiliated industry partners prior to this year’s expo.

The short course will be held Tuesday, March 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Convention Center.

The I-29 Dairy Outreach Consortium consists of the Extension Services at North Dakota State University, the University of Minnesota, Iowa State University, South Dakota State University and University of Nebraska-Lincoln, as well as the Iowa State Dairy Association, South Dakota Dairy Producers Association and Southwest Minnesota Dairy Profit Group.

Topics to be covered during the short course include:

  • The profitability of dairy steers: economics (budgets, break-evens and marketing) of dairy beef production - Robert Tigner, Nebraska Extension educator - agriculture
  • Nutritional and management strategies for dairy beef producers - Reid McDaniels, SDSU beef feedlot specialist
  • The impact of the veterinary feed directive on dairy beef production - Russ Daly, SDSU Extension veterinarian
  • Specialized management for dairy beef: high-energy feeding, implants, marketing dairy beef - Hubbard Feed representative

The event is free and lunch will be provided. Attendees should preregister because of the limited seating capacity. To preregister, contact J.W. Schroeder, NDSU Extension dairy specialist, at jw.schroeder@ndsu.edu or (701) 231-7663.

“All attendees also are encouraged to partake in the evening activities at the welcome reception for the Central Plains Dairy Expo, featuring Thompson Square as entertainment,” Schroeder says. “The reception is free to dairy producers, dairy beef feeders and others in the dairy industry. It is being held in the Sanford Premier Center, which is adjacent to the Convention Center.”
