Democrats Take Control of Congress in 2026 Midterms: What the Political Shift Means for U.S. Pork Producers

2026 U.S. midterm elections have delivered a significant shift in Washington, with Democrats winning control of both the House of Representatives and Senate and securing victories in several major agricultural states.

For America’s pork producers, the implications extend beyond party control. The results will reshape congressional agriculture committees, influence the direction of Farm Bill negotiations and introduce new political dynamics surrounding issues including California’s Proposition 12, foreign animal disease preparedness, agricultural trade and federal support for livestock production.

The election results also bring new representation to states that play central roles in U.S. pork production, creating both uncertainty and opportunities for industry engagement.

Agricultural States Help Reshape Congress
Among the most consequential election results for agriculture were Democratic victories in traditionally Republican states, including Iowa and Kansas.

In Iowa, the nation’s largest pork-producing state, Democrat Josh Turek defeated Republican Ashley Hinson in the race to succeed retiring Senator Joni Ernst. Democrat Rob Sand also won the state’s gubernatorial election.

In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton defeated incumbent Republican Senator Roger Marshall, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee.

Several Republican members of the House Agriculture Committee also lost their reelection bids, including Zach Nunn of Iowa, Rob Bresnahan of Pennsylvania, Monica De La Cruz of Texas and Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin.
