Farms Getting Bigger, Farmers Getting Older In Saskatchewan

The latest Census of Agriculture shows Saskatchewan farmers are getting older and farms are getting bigger, but at least one farm leader is worried about some trends.

The federal agency says the average farmer is 55-years old, a rise of one year since the last census.

Norm Hall, vice president of APAS, is concerned about the aging farm population and a 12-percent decline in cattle farms.

“It’s always a concern because once guys get out of cattle, they rarely get back in,” said Hall. “A lot of those numbers are the small, mixed numbers that had 50 or 75 of small head – and they’re just getting out.”
