ST. ALBERT – If you have ever wanted to witness an attempt at a Guinness World Record, then you will want to be in St. Albert, Ontario on August 22 when an attempt will be made to set a record for the most plow blades pulled simultaneously.
The attempt has been in the works since 2020 and was envisioned by local resident Francois Latour with the support of Juliette Forgues-Latour. The original plan was to try to set the record for the largest number of plowmen, but when the logistics of that attempt didn’t seem to work, Latour modified his plans and decided to aim for the largest number of plow blades being pulled simultaneously. It will take place at 1776 Route 700 West, St. Albert, Ontario, land which is owned, and which had generously been made available by Marc & Ghislain Laflèche, of St-Albert
If you are there on the day of the attempt, you will see 80 furrows being plowed, the equivalent of 40 2-furrow plows connected together. The plows will be pulled by six antique tractors from the 1970’s, one each of
- John Deere
- Massey Ferguson
- Ford
- White
- Case
- International
There will, of course be an official Guinness World Record adjudicator present to verify the results.
The record attempt is taking place in conjunction with the Clarence-Rockland (Russell) Plowing Match.
And while the record attempt will be the highlight of the day, it is by no means the only thing happening. There is a full schedule of fun scheduled for people of all ages.
The event will take place rain or shine. Admission is $20 per person, children under 12 years are free.
With your admission you will have access to Guinness World Record Attempt Square Dancing Tractors from St. Albert (Shows at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.)
Live musical entertainment in the evening from Les Rats de S’wompe. Various activities throughout the day, such as a hay bale maze, face painting, go carts, horse-drawn wagon rides, puzzle competition (500 pieces, team of two, maximum of 30 teams), and even a lawn tractor pull.
There will be a selection of exhibitors (lots of antique machinery and tractors), vendors, and working displays as well as the actual plowing match and open plowing.
Events like this don’t happen without a lot of volunteer support, and Latour has recruited an army of volunteers to ensure that St. Albert can claim a Guinness World Record. The only thing that would make it better would be to have a large audience to witness their success.
